This is true to life. When I got arrested I didn’t get strip searched, but I did have to take off my socks and shoes and go barefoot.

Its usualy said, all things that can be used to harm yourself (suicide by hanging for example) yourself must be removed.
I know that in Germany, they remove your belt and shoes (if they have shoelaces at least), if your put into jail (to stay, lets say for a night)
Theoretically, you could aswell strangle yourself with socks (maybe long enough if tied together), but then again, cou could also do it with the arms of your pullover, right? Hmm.
I have seen this in German TV-Shows about Police work. No shoes in cell. But usualy they have socks on, if they had socks on in their shoes. But they also showed girls beeing there barefoot (because they wore no socks in their shoes when these came off for intake)
For barefoot prisoners in history, I recall Germany, during WW2, enforcing a law to limit shoes in prison to winter only, because all shoemakers are needed to do shoes for soldiers. So that prisoners had to stay barefoot in summer. (But, well my grandmother and mother said, back then, children never wore shoes in summer except for going to church on sunday.
Drawings of prisoners in a Prison of around the year 1800 usualy show prisoners without wearing shoes or socks.
During the middle age, putting of shoes and walking barefoot was the traditonal sign of the sinner who pays for his/her sins.
I recall Emperor Henry IV, going barefoot to the pope to ask for forgiveness.
Or a sentence in the city of Minster, that a women shall sweep the marketplace while beeing barefoot for swearing in church.
Or another situation, where the leaders were meant to surrender themself, barefoot and with ropes around their necks, ready to be hanged. Then the citizens would be spared.
The robber hero “Schinderhannes” (Germany 18th century), usualy made the people he robbed to pull off shoes and stockings, because barefoot they cant run fast, wich gives him more time before they reach the guards to tell them about this.
oh, btw, I also have a fetish about barefoot prisoners. 😉
